Tips for First Time Car Buyers

I know that some of you out there will be more of a pro at this than me but I realised I hadn’t really seen any posts like this which shocked me because I REALLY could have done with this before I bought my first car 3 and a half years ago! I was really lucky to have my granddad around to give me tips and to help me out. The first thing you need to do when buying a car is decide which one you want. Things to consider when looking for a model are as below.

– MPG

– Insurance band

– Tax band

– Price

The MPG is important because you don’t want to be burning through fuel like nobody’s business. This seemed pretty irrelevant when I bought my car but believe me, it’s something I wish I had looked into. This determines how much fuel you will use so if you are doing long distance you will want the highest MPG possible. Looking at what insurance band the model you want is in is also very important because you don’t want to buy a car to find that you can’t get insured to drive the blooming thing, and try not to have a heart attack when you get a quote, it does get easier to part with a huge chunk of cash. I promise.

Tax bands are a strange one also, a quick Google can usually tell you which band the car is in and how much you will pay but this does depend on the engine size also. You can pay tax monthly now which can be handy and providing you’re not driving a monster truck then tax is quite easy to afford. Finally the price. Think about what you can afford? Are you getting a newer car? Are you going for finance? If not have you saved the money for the car? Do you know what kind of price you are looking at paying?

Once you have done all of this you can do the fun part and actually go look at cars. I have to admit, this was so nerve wracking for me. I was so worried that I would do something wrong but it wasn’t as daunting as I first thought. Things to look out for are as below.

-Seller

-Checks

-Dints

-Test drive

Making sure you check out the seller is important, it’s important to check reviews etc because you don’t want to be ripped off. It is important to check the car hasn’t been in an accident, that you are aware of any dents or scratches, any work that has been recently completed. Finally the exciting bit is the test drive, I didn’t get to test drive my first car due to not having any insurance because I had JUST passed my test but I did get to with my second car and it was a lot of fun! I nearly ran someone over at a crossing but other than that it wasn’t too disastrous.
